Castlewood Canyon

In my effort to drag the girls out of the house every weekend, Karen was free this Sunday (having worked Saturday instead) and we we all took a trip to Castlewood Canyon. What we thought was a gentle 1.4 mile hike turned out to be just a bit over 3.4 miles both ways. This is easily twice the distance we did last week, and yes, Xana complained most of the way. BUT, she complained LESS… and she did the entire distance with us.

Bea, on the other hand, wanted to hike further than this pic shows, but we didn’t want to push our luck with Xana. We turned around from the falls after this photo and made our way back through the trails. It was certainly an interesting hike today, as we took the Homestead Trail to the Creek Bottom Trail, passing by ruins of old homesteads (thus the name). Lots of cool pics, plenty of vegetation and trails to choose from. Most was under cover from the sun, so while it was a pretty hot day of about 89 degrees, we were protected most of the way. But I think next week, we might start considering going up higher in elevation for our next hike!

Berry Farms Berry Good!

Xana and StellaThis morning we traveled to Berry Patch Farms in Brighton, Colorado. It being the middle of September the raspberries were in season and there were still some good picking for strawberries. Karen told me about this a day earlier and we were both looking forward to it.

Xana and StellaXana is a strawberry fiend and this was the perfect place for her. We started with a tractor ride into the strawberry fields. We were able to point out all the flowers, vegetables and fruits growing as we passed. The fields were large but you had to hunt for some of the choice strawberries. Some of the best were under leaves, in the shade while still others seemed to shine from across the way.

I couldn’t pick them fast enough. I think Xana ate 2 strawberries for every one that made it into the basket.

Xana and StellaBefore I knew it, Xana was covered in strawberry juice. The natural sugar hit her and we’ve never seen her so happy. She was laughing hard, smiling bright, and kept saying, “More, please Pappa… More, please Pappa…”I’d take a step and she’d swallow, take a step, swallow…

Xana and StellaAfter the strawberries, it was back onto the tractor to be pulled back to the front where we could hunt for raspberries. Karen ducked into the store with Bea to pick up some veggies for dinner while Xana and I took off for the raspberry fields.

They were divine. There were also more of them ripe and easier to find. They were still sweet with the deepest reds. This time I couldn’t stop eating them as Xana enoyed the feel of them in her hand more than their taste. At this point, her shirt is covered in juice, her face is bright red and the seeds from the strawberries are starting sprout about her face.

That was enough for a Saturday morning and we left with 3 large baskets of strawberries, 2 small baskets of raspberries and a variety of vegetables for fajitas tonight. We were hoping for some sweet corn, but they had none available. Twenty minutes later, the sugar began to wear off and Xana crashed in the car.Xana and Stella

Improptu Family Portrait

Xana and StellaNope, it wasn’t planned. No ingenious scheme to distract the girls. We were trying to get out of the door when it just became perfect timing to take our very first family portrait. Even “Happy” made it into the shot.

This photo says a lot. And despite how improvisational it was the photo seems to pick up a lot of our personality. I love how Xana has one hand on Happy and one hand on Bea’s car seat. Nestled in my arms she appears to feel everything is safe in the world. It’s crazy how Xana’s hair has Karen’s color and my curls. Karen doesn’t look like she just gave birth 2 months ago and Bea sure doesn’t look like a 2 month old baby.

Now, if she was only looking forward…

Kid Comparison

This image was taken 2 years and 8 days apart. Xana, on the left at 7 weeks and Bea, on the right at 7 weeks, maybe 6.

I love the comparison here. The noses are the same, the lips are REALLY close and they both have chubby cheeks. With their eyes closed they look much more alike than when they are opened wide, however Bea’s eyes have gotten large like Xana’s but darker.
